Noel Rose introduces Lindsay Roberts

There were two guest speakers at the August monthly meeting. Retired Senior Sergeant Bob Barrett talked about his early days in the NZ Police. Not to be outdone, former St John Ambulance Officer Lindsay Roberts talked about working for St John during the 1960s, including his involvement in the recapture of Mt Eden prison escaper George Wilder.

Both talks are thoroughly written up in this newsletter. Photographs relevant to the addresses are included, such as the old Auckland Central Police Station in O’Rourke Street and the grey and white Dodge F100 ambulances used by the St John Ambulance Service.

In his regular column, “President’s Prattle,” Bill Mutch predicted we would follow Australia in doing away with masks, except at old folks’ villages. Eleven days after Bill wrote his column, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that New Zealand’s Covid-19 traffic light system would be scrapped and all mask-wearing requirements removed, except in healthcare and aged care facilities.
