This month’s feature article highlights the guest speaker’s talk from our October meeting at the New Lynn Friendship Hall. The main article is Alan Verry’s fascinating account of his 2017 visit to Cuba. Alan, a train enthusiast with a passion for locomotives from all eras and regions, discovered a country where many famous trains from around the world have found a new home after being retired from service in their original countries.
Alan’s journey to Cuba was part of a package tour organized by PTG Tours, a British travel company originally known as the Portuguese Traction Group. He travelled across the country in a chartered Budd Diesel Car (RDC) built in 1957, which was imported to Cuba after its service in Canada ended. This historic vehicle was lovingly maintained by a dedicated group of rail enthusiasts who funded its restoration themselves.
While there were no trips to report this month, we did have a well-attended coffee morning at The Alderman, located next to Falls Park in Henderson. The venue’s charm perhaps contributed to the large turnout, including some members we hadn’t seen in quite some time. The newsletter includes a story about two of these long-absent members, Alan Babich and Rodger Hallen.
