This newsletter is packed with a variety of engaging content. One highlight is the full transcript of Corrections Manager John Small’s talk on Paremoremo Prison, delivered at our August meeting. After receiving the transcript, John made several thoughtful edits and additions, leading us to include the entire, uncut version in this issue.
In August, members of the West Auckland Rebus Club and Waitakere Rebus Club had the pleasure of visiting the new Metlifecare retirement village at Orion Point in Hobsonville, courtesy of Amanda McCullough and Kirsty Guy. The visit offered a first-hand look at the top-tier amenities available to residents, including a well-appointed cafeteria and café, a resident’s pavilion, a fully-equipped workshop, a gym, and a swimming pool. Photos in this newsletter capture the essence of village life, where residents enjoy not only a permanent resort-style environment but also the companionship of others who have shared similar life experiences across the decades.
Additionally, this newsletter serves as a reminder that retirement can be filled with enriching activities, challenging the notion that life after work is uneventful. Members can look forward to a coffee morning at Gloria Jean’s, followed by a trip to Auckland Zoo, known for its excellent Te Puna Café. The following week, there’s a roast meal and movie at Ryder’s in Riversdale Road. Members won’t want to miss the Christmas Lunch at McHugh’s of Cheltenham, which will be preceded by a visit to the scenic Kauri Glen Reserve, where they can experience the breathtaking ‘Sky Bridge’ boardwalk through the forest canopy.
