Lynley McGovern from Anytime Fitness New Lynn speaking at the April 2025 meeting

Our May newsletter spotlights two standout speakers who brought energy and insight to our meetings.

Lynley McGovern from Anytime Fitness New Lynn shared her inspiring journey from real estate to fitness coach. She reminded us it’s never too late to start, citing stories of transformation—like a 72-year-old gym newcomer and her 62-year-old partner, now fitter than ever. Her secret? Just three 30-minute resistance sessions a week, whole foods, and staying socially connected (which we’ve got sorted!).

Charles Nicholls JP talking about the Ottoman Empire at its peak in 566 AD

Charles Nicholls then took us on a thoughtful journey through history with a nuanced portrait of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk—the man who led Turkey from a crumbling empire to a modern republic. From women’s rights to the Latin alphabet, Charles highlighted Ataturk’s visionary reforms, while also acknowledging his complexities.

Raymond Barrett (arms folded) talking to Alan Verry at Kreem Cafe

Also in this edition: Bill Mutch’s remarks on our cheerful visit to Waiuku and the historic Kentish Hotel, our buzzing coffee morning at Kreem Café, and Claudia’s Corner with the usual mix of groan-worthy gems.

From health tips to history, humour to hospitality—it’s all here in May’s edition.
