Highwic on a glorious autumn day with not a cloud in the sky

Sometimes the best meetings are unplanned! When our May speaker didn’t arrive, President Bill Mutch turned the moment into gold by inviting members to share stories. The result? A lively session full of laughter and surprises.

We heard Vince Dennehy’s tale of being the third-choice hire (and still thriving), and Mensto De Roos’s cinema reel mix-up that had Brigitte Bardot unexpectedly appear in a children’s film! Bill Mutch recalled his chaotic first day in a pet store, while Trevor Pollard shared a plumbing apprentice mishap involving black mastic. Vince Middeldorp’s story of a student who only attended class for free TV repair advice had everyone chuckling.

Alan Verry had a significant involvement in the making of Northern Explorer episode of Worlds Most Scenic Railway Journeys

Meanwhile, Alan Verry’s TV fame continues to grow! His feature on World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys is now airing across Europe and Canada, making him a surprise ambassador for Kiwi rail travel.

Also in this edition: Mensto’s discovery in Holland of a memorial to WWII pilot Lt. Alberto Albino, and the Highwic House trip, where members learned about Alfred Buckland—livestock auctioneer and father of 21!

From spontaneous storytelling to history, humour, and rail adventures—June’s edition is full of surprises.
