Chelsea Ralls delivered the talk at Pūkorokoro Miranda on Arctic migrants and New Zealand shorebirds

Our April newsletter is brimming with stories, but this month’s standout feature is our recent trip to the Pükorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre.

At the Shorebird Centre, we dove into the incredible world of godwits, those tireless globetrotters who zip from New Zealand to Alaska via the Yellow Sea, then back non-stop! We learned why they head to the tundra (think endless buffets and wide-open spaces) and marvelled at the grit of these birds, with females laying eggs half their body weight before leaving the males to play single dad.

For lunch, we went to the legendary Kaiaua Fisheries. One fish, 22 chips—crisp, golden perfection served on plates with side salad faster than a godwit in flight.

This trip wasn’t just ours—41 folks from three clubs (Henderson Falls Friendship, Waitakere Combined Rebus, and us) filled the bus to 80% capacity. At $20 a head, including a $5 talk fee, it was a steal for a day of learning and legendary kai.

Our April newsletter has it all—from the Shorebird Centre saga to Garth Dutton’s 40-year certificate presentation, Bill Fairs’ Probus memories, and Vince Middeldorp’s dive into club history.
