Our December monthly meeting featured an extraordinary talk from Laurie Vincent, whose athletic career placed him at the heart of New Zealand’s golden era of distance running. Not only was Laurie a competitive runner and athletics coach, but he also trained and competed during the legendary Arthur Lydiard coaching period that produced Olympic champions Peter Snell and Murray Halberg, along with international marathon runners including Bill Ballie, Jeff Julian, and Ivan Keats.

Neil Castle shared the inspiring journey of his late brother Len Castle, who made the courageous decision to leave his position as a lecturer at Auckland Teachers’ Training College to pursue his true passion: pottery. That leap of faith transformed Len into one of New Zealand’s leading potters, and today his work commands thousands of dollars at art auctions.

The newsletter also features Laurie Vincent in another capacity: as a writer covering the Christmas Musical performance at the Chapel of Faith in the Oaks. This beloved annual event, orchestrated by the tireless Trevor Pollard, was once again a resounding success. The Chapel overflowed with attendees, a testament to Trevor’s dedication and the community’s enthusiasm for this festive tradition.
